How to Navigate Meltdowns During or After Sports

Published On: January 23, 2024
Over the past three years, we’ve learned a ton about how kids navigate big emotions. And, when kids are highly sensitive, managing their emotions through the highs and lows of sports can be even more challenging for them.

I discovered Megghan Thompson Coaching about a year ago when I was struggling to understand my own kiddo’s reaction to certain situations. We ended up taking her parenting bootcamp and boom, our eyes were opened and we quickly learned to understand how our son was processing what was happening around him and how we needed to respond to his needs. She is an excellent coach.

Check out this Megghan Thompson video Choosing sports over meltdowns…the wrong thing to do?

When melt downs happen when you are getting ready to go to a game, or the kiddo melts down on the court or pitch, there are some clear signs to recognize and navigate to help them enjoy what they are doing.  Switching activities or sports may not be the solution.

It may be that the behavior has nothing to do with the sport, but that it is an emotional regulation challenge. Your child may be unable to recognize the big emotions they are experiencing and then respond in a socially inappropriate way.

In this video, Megghan walks through what your kiddo is feeling and how you should respond to them in order to help them handle their big emotions.

I highly recommend Megghan Thompson Coaching and this video about meltdowns during or after sports.
